Of all the productions by Queensland playwrights in 1977, Man of Steel, a musical by Simon Denver and Ian Dorricott and directed by Jo Denver, was the only one which did well at the box office. It had an enduring after-life as one of the most produced musicals in secondary schools in Australia.
A revised version was staged the following year by Salisbury High School students, directed by Jan McLean with Musical Direction by Loretta Dueck.
