Red Cap
Red Cap by Brisbane playwright Janis Balodis with music composed by Iain Grandage had seasons in both Mt Isa and Brisbane. Indeed, the Company’s stated objective “to create theatre that speaks to, and on behalf of, our community through telling stories that can contextualise and comment upon our lived experience”[i] seemed to be epitomised in Red Cap, directed by Sean Mee – “a tale of community triumph over rampant authoritarianism”.[ii] A music-theatre production about the Mount Isa mining dispute of 1964 and its anti-hero Pat Mackie who led the miners against the company, the police and even their own union, it was a co-production by La Boite, Queensland Music Festival and Mount Isa City Council. As theatre critic Rosemary Sorensen wrote “… if we needed to make a case for theatre's ability to be relevant as well as entertaining, Red Cap has strong credentials”.[iii]
